M5 (Base): Performance(4) + Efficiency(6) = 10 cores — traditional 2-tier design
M5 Pro/Max: Super(6) + Performance(12) = 18 cores — first-ever 3-tier hierarchy
M5 Pro/Max have zero Efficiency cores. Every core is performance-class. The Super Core is Apple's "world's fastest single-threaded core."
Bandwidth directly correlates with AI inference tokens/sec. M5 Max can theoretically generate LLM tokens ~4x faster than M5 base.
SC spread across the M5 family is only ~6%. Daily responsiveness is virtually identical.
M5 Max is +73% faster than M5 base in multi-core.
| Metric | M5 vs M4 | M5 Pro vs M4 Pro | M5 Max vs M4 Max |

The most significant M5 change: every GPU core now includes a Neural Accelerator.
Apple's "4x AI" means each chip vs its own predecessor. In absolute terms, M5 Max has 4x the AI hardware of M5 base.
| Workload | M5 | M5 Pro | M5 Max |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7B params (Llama 3 Small) | ✅ Capable | ✅ Smooth | ✅ Blazing |
| 70B params (Llama 3 Large) | ❌ Not enough RAM | ⚠️ Q4 on 64GB | ★ 128GB+614GB/s optimal |
| Apple Intelligence | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
Key takeaway: For 70B+ local inference, M5 Max's 128GB + 614 GB/s is the ticket.
| Comparison | M5 (Single Die) | M5 Pro/Max (Fusion) |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Everything on one die | Two dies fused as one |
| Advantage | Proven stability | More cores/bandwidth |
| Risk | Limited scaling | Inter-die latency, thermals unknown |
| Comparable | — | AMD Chiplet (servers) |
⚠️ Fusion Architecture is gen-1 technology. Early adopters are essentially beta-testing it.

All models saw price increases. Base gets 2x storage (512GB→1TB); Pro/Max reflect Fusion Architecture + AI premium. Korea premium ~9–11%.
1. "4x AI" Is Relative — M5 Max Has 4x the Absolute AI Hardware
Apple says "4x AI" for all three chips — but each is 4x vs its own predecessor. M5 Max (40 Neural Accelerators) has 4x the hardware of M5 base (10). For 70B+ LLM inference, this gap is everything.
2. Bandwidth Is the Real Differentiator — Not CPU Speed
SC varies ~6% (4,263–4,500). Bandwidth varies 4x (153–614 GB/s). LLM tokens/sec scales with bandwidth. The purchase decision should be about bandwidth, not benchmarks.
3. Fusion Architecture = Apple's Chiplet Play — Gen 1 Risk
Apple's first dual-die consumer chip. AMD proved chiplets work in servers, but early gens had latency and thermal issues. Whether Unified Memory solves this — we'll know when reviews drop.
4. Super Core = New CPU Tier
M5 base: P+E (2 tiers). M5 Pro/Max: S+P (no E cores). Super Core explains the SC edge. Zero Efficiency cores means every core pulls its weight.
5. Every Model Costs More — $100–$400 AI Tax Across the Board
M5 base: $1,599→$1,699 (+6%, 1TB standard). Pro: +$200 (+10%). Max: +$400 (+11%). Korea premium runs ~9–11% — higher than the historical 5–8%. Apple priced the AI leap as a premium tier.
